Twelve people were injured in the crash, which happened on the M6 in Warwickshire. A 31-year-old lorry driver has been bailed until May 27 after he was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The scene of the pile up!A six year old girl suffered severe head injuries and was transfered from University Hospital in Coventry to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham for treatment. Her condition is not thought to be life-threatening, a spokeswoman for Warwickshire Police said, but added: "The little girl is still very, very poorly."

Her brother, who is about two, suffered two broken legs and a broken arm in the crash.

He and the children's 36-year-old mother, who had severe bruising to her arm, were also transferred to Nottingham.

The children's aunt will remain at Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital, where she is being treated for serious chest injuries.

The family, from Herefordshire, were in an Audi along the M6 southbound when the collision occurred between junction 1 near Rugby and the Catthorpe interchange where the M6, M1 and A14 meet.

The collision involved the Audi, an articulated Renault lorry, a Ford Mondeo, two Fiat Ducato panel vans, a Vauxhall Vectra saloon and a Toyota multi-purpose vehicle - which came to rest on its roof.

The crash came at the start of the Easter getaway and caused a delay of up to 90 minutes on Thursday evening. Roads are expected to be busy over the bank holiday weekend, which is predicted to be wet, windy and cold.
